History

Three centuries Brewing

I
1686

On 2 July 1686 the Prince-Bishop of Paderborn granted the brewing right to the owner of the Rheder estate, Christian Falcko Freiherr von Mengersen. In 1716 his son Burchardus Bruno Freiherr von Mengersen, minister to the Prince-Bishop in Paderborn, commissioned the then still young Baroque architect to build the church of St. Katharina in Rheder and the horseshoe-shaped outer bailey, which has housed the various departments of the brewery from the very first day. In the following generation, in 1750, the palace was built.

II
1830

The brewery was extended for the first time and converted into a steam brewery on the Bavarian model. This made it possible to brew bottom-fermented beer, which keeps and travels better. Where the Weidenpalais stands today, ice ponds were laid out in the first half of the 19th century to harvest ice for cooling the beer in winter. The mill of 1710 was converted into a wheat mill. The storage cellar at the foot of the ‘Sieseberg’ nature reserve was also built during this period.

III
1902

After a temporary lease of the estate and brewery around 1850, the von Spiegel family took over farming and brewing again from 1902. The brewery was further expanded and modernised. Even then, wooden vats and storage barrels were replaced by aluminium tanks.

HÜTT
New in Rheder

HÜTT and Hessisches Löwenbier

After the liquidation of the Hütt brewery in Bettenhausen at the Knallhütte, the traditional beers HÜTT and Hessisches Löwenbier continue to be brewed in Rheder to the original recipes — nine generations of North Hessian brewing history, carried on by a house with the same standards.

This means the Hessian classics will now also be on the menu at Schloß Gehrden — alongside Pils, Helles and wheat beer from Rheder.
